Kenya Travel Plan- Nairobi and Planning the Itinerary

This trip came all of a sudden. If you follow my blog, then you also may know that I work for the Travel Industry, and this trip to Kenya came as one of those office trips which I will not forget for a very long time. It was an all-organized and sponsored trip by our partner and my office, I was accompanied by 3 other colleagues.. so none of the travel criteria did this trip lived upto.. but still it was a memorable trip.. and surely I should share my experience of whatever little we manage to see in between our work.. the only thing I won’t be able to help you much with is cost bifurcation as I do in my other travel plans.. but will try as much as I can..

After all those eye-popping and nail-clenching jungle safari stories, it’s time to come back to the same old and return to regular life!! SO Nairobi it is and mostly, people use this place as just a layover. Even we did the same.. office trips!! You know how they are!! But even Nairobi has a few things to see.

if you wish to buy local handicrafts and you couldn’t manage buying anything en-route (as your drivers will take you to places on the way for loo break come some coffee break come some local shopping, mind you these shops are quite expensive and you have to know how to bargain, but still you can manage something or the other).. and you can finish the pending in Nairobi.

There are a few shopping villages, selling local handicrafts, you may go and buy there. If you want to buy coffee or macadamia nuts, then you may go to Carrefour. They sell at the correct price. However our driver-guide didn’t allow us to go to the local market, they always wanted us to be safe.

NOTE: to mention here, as a first-time tourist, drivers always warn you not to go out on yourself into the city for your own safety, at certain places it’s safe to roam around, but better to leave your precious possessions inside the safety of your hotel.

There is a national park right in the middle of the city, and it’s perimeters aren’t highly secured, hence walking across the national park (mainly for the locals if I say) isn’t quite safe. However, one can go and visit the place.

Then there is a Giraffe Centre where one can feed the giraffes, and have lunch inside. Entrance costs about 135- 150 USD pp if having lunch inside otherwise USD 35.00 pp.

There is a train museum, a national museum, a famous national academy for theatre, art and culture etc. SO if anyone wants to extend their stay by another night here to take a tour of the city, they have a few options.

Boulevard, Sarova Panafric, Pride Inn Azure, Sarova Stanley, Norfolk, Tamarind Tree, Radisson, Four Point etc are a few of the good options.

A great great luxury option is Norfolk by Fairmont. If staying here, you should surely plan 2 nights for sure.. the property is a landmark itself.

If you come by morning flight, then straight away head out of Nairobi.. however, if you are coming by evening, then you have to stay a night in NBO and then start the next morning. I am starting from other points:

Our tour plan was just like this:

Aberdare -> Mount Kenya -> Naivasha Via Elementaita -> Masai Mara -> Nairobi

Aberdare– 1-2 nights (Better 2 nights)

You Can also plan Ol-Pejeta in Between

Mount Kenya- 1-2 nights

Naivasha 2-3 nights

(you can also stay at Elementaita or Nakuru before Naivasha.. why? For that you have to read the post)

Masai Mara- minimum 3 nights (even 2 is too less here)

Nairobi- 1 night.. but if you wish to visit the National park or giraffe centre.. then you need 2 days for sure.

Apart from this, you may also consider: Samburu, Tsavo up in the north, where you get to see some rare species of animals, Kisumu to see Victoria Falls from Kenya side, then there is Mombasa of course, which is famous for its beach, then there is Amboseli.. so you see the country is quiet vast to cover in a week.. you can plan for a good 2 weeks here..

SO that’s Kenya for you, to you at the moment.. hopefully, there will be more visits by me and I will be able to share more of the place.. till then wait for the next post.. something interesting is on the way..
