Blog Post: Kenya Travel Plan- Ol Pejeta

This trip came all of a sudden. If you follow my blog, then you also may know that I work for the Travel Industry, and this trip to Kenya came as one of those office trips which I will not forget for a very long time. It was an all-organized and sponsored trip by our partner and my office, I was accompanied by 3 other colleagues.. so none of the travel criteria did this trip lived upto.. but still it was a memorable trip.. and surely I should share my experience of whatever little we manage to see in between our work.. the only thing I won’t be able to help you much with is cost bifurcation as I do in my other travel plans.. but will try as much as I can

After Aberdare our next stop was Ol Pejeta. We did a day tour there and stayed at another place for the night.. that will be later.. first let’s cover Ol Pejeta.

Ok before I come to Ol Pejeta, we (it wasn’t a solo trip if you remember) crossed the line of Equator on the way to Ol Pejeta. You know the line of Equator right? An equator is an imaginary line around the middle of our planet separating Earth by North pole and South pole from 0 degree. Kenya is one of the countries from where the line of Equator is passing over. SO what is so interesting about it?? You must read this part.. so once you go to one side of the line, say the northern part, the movement of the wind is clockwise, then you move to the other part of the line, i.e. south, the wind movement is anti-clockwise.. and when you are exactly on the line, it’s quiet. A guide showed us with a bowl of water and at the line of Equator, the water was falling straight. Please check the videos below.. it’s basically because of the gravitation and rotation of Earth.

So now back to our next stop, what is Ol Pejeta? It’s the name of a place! What else!! Ok ok.. serious answers only.. So Ol Pejeta is indeed the name of a place and this is a private conservancy. There are a few properties here to stay here. Sweet Waters tented camps is one of the options you may consider, really a good one. Waking up with the view of impalas, zebras roaming, grazing in front of you and the property is really great in terms of modern facilities.

The drive from Aberdare to Ol Pejeta is 2 hours, not more..so start after breakfast. Once you reach Ol Pejeta Conservancy, you have to register yourself. If you are way before check-in time, then better enjoy a small game drive en route and then check in by lunchtime. You don’t get the carnivorous wild here, you can see zebras, rhinos, giraffes, elephants, buffalos, birds etc here. It’s a good place to spot the harmless wilderness. We also saw the burial of the rhinos who were killed a few years back by poachers. Luckily the government has been quite strict with its policies that poaching in Kenya has been controlled to a great extent now.

We also saw one of the oldest Rhinos here, he is kept separately for his safety as he has become blind. He is 28 years old and still enjoying life.

There is also a Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where the house rescued Chimps, currently there are about 28(most likely the number is correct) chimpanzees divided into 2 families.

The game drive, you can give half a day. And rest of the day, enjoy the property you are staying at. The properties in the game drives are all in open areas, so not just enjoy the room and your space there, you are within nature, feel its quietude, the view around you.. a trip to Kenya is kind of a lifetime experience. I felt it once I visited it.. otherwise I never had this feeling..

Duration:

You can easily spend 1-2 nights here. Don’t rush or don’t keep running while here, though I say this for all my travel plans. And I believe in it. Though this trip for me was strictly for work, we just stole our moments in between. But if those small little moments were so precious to us, just imagine, how a proper holiday in Kenya will be like..

Meal plan has to be on Full board basis, there’s no restaurant available where hippos or zebras will serve you a cocktail in the mid of dense wild jungle.. don’t expect any Madagascar here.. we are talking real-life Animal Planet..

That’s all for Olepejta I have.. next post on Next Stop!!!
